Detroit free press circulation7/25/2023 In the winter, I would wear my flannel pajamas under my clothes when I did my route. As a youngster, you could eat anything with an endless appetite. I ate Dunkin Donuts on Saturdays after my route, when I had to go up and pay my bill at the local office. When my Grandma lived with us, she made white toast and spread lots of butter and jelly on it, and had it waiting for me when I got home from my route. I had time to come home and read the paper, eat breakfast and take a nap before going to school. I enjoyed getting up at 4:45am, to be getting my papers at 5am, and delivering the route before school. I was also partial to the Free Press because from age 11 until age 17, I had a Free Press paper route. I still do that today with the Sunday paper. I liked to take a morning daily paper and turn it page by page, spread out on the living room floor. I was partial to the Free Press, not just because my Dad worked there, but the Free Press seemed easier to read, with less advertising, and more articles. But the paper still was printed in the morning, and the News was printed in the afternoon. The Free Press went through labor disputes and merged with the Detroit News. He then restarted his career with the Detroit Free Press in the Circulation Department, and worked his way up to regional manager in charge of supervisors and office locations. My Dad then went on to work in the Circulation Department of the Detroit Times until it folded. My Dad and his brother needed to support the family during difficult financial times, so they both had Detroit Times paper routes in the 20s and 30s.
